Bushbuck Hills Game Farm offers different routes for both the novices and experienced drivers to explore the farm in an exciting and challenging way. The mountain terrain of the farm is a superior 4×4 trail destination with some spectacular views. Beautiful eco trails are also available for the not so adventurous to discover the landscape in a more relaxing way.

A number of 4×4 routes are available on the farm, some quite easy and some requiring considerable driver skills, low range diff lock on for traction control, and a strong, reliable 4×4 vehicle.  The routes pass over mountainous rocks, through bushveld grasslands and ravines and up to view points with the most spectacular 360 degree views.  4×4 Enthusiasts can test their vehicles (and their nerves) on the more challenging sections.

The most difficult climb is up to the top of plateau entering from the White House farmhouse side.  The route is difficult and with extremely rocky patches, only suitable for advanced 4×4 drivers and definitely not for the faint-hearted!

Routes are clearly rated and marked on the farm and a detailed map is provided showing all the routes and their ratings.   Please note that certain routes should not be attempted after rain as the clay soil becomes very slippery making the road either un-passable or extremely dangerous.

Mountain Bike Trails

Mountain bike trails are clearly marked and rated on the farm. Some 4×4 trails are also suitable for mountain biking.

Some trails start in the foothills of the mountains and offers a number of serious rock obstacles, rapid descents and steep climbs as well as flat areas. The mountain trails are definitely not for the novice cyclist but there are many routes on the plateau and in the flatter areas for beginner riders. Beginners or casual riders can have great family fun and enjoy the spectacular mountain scenery along the different trails which provides the added bonus of game-viewing opportunities at leisure.

There are four colour-coded trails, rated from beginner trails to advance trails. Most trails starts off with a cruise from the different farm accommodation units, but it is not long before you get into the climb. There are four options going up, the first goes up in the kloof alongside a natural stream with some steep climbing but a beautiful shaded area with a real “Knysna” feeling. You are most likely to find the bushbucks here!

The second, third and fourth routes up is from the White House farmhouse. One route is barely rideable due to the insanely steep gradient and loose rock patches – this is guaranteed to get the heart rate pumping and the adrenalin flowing on the descent! The next route up is an easier climb with beautiful panoramic views of the farm and you’re almost guaranteed to see some Zebra and Kudu along this way.

The last route up is further along the right-hand side of the farm also following a stream at some places with some climbing but breath taking views of the farm.

Hiking Trails

There are different hiking trails at Bushbuck Hills. The trails are a series of loops for local weekend visitors as well as a 2-day fully-fledged hike for hikers.

Trails vary in length depending on your hiking skills and the combination of trails chosen – from a 2km circle route to a 11km day trial.  The shorter nature trails offers magnificent bird watching and tree spotting opportunities. We offer a strenuous mountain trail with some tough mountain climbing involved and even a chain ladder for the adventurer!

On day 1 of this trail, hikers can stay in the Main Farmhouse and hike to the Mountain Cabin, with a distance of 9km.  The first part of the trail is through Bushveld and then it follows the mountainous area of the Pilansberg range with undulating hills. The trail heads up in the kloof alongside a flowing mountain stream in a densely vegetated valley.  Here hikers can unwind, relax a bit and  refresh themselves in the fountain swimming hole. On the plateau area you will not only find protea groves and real mountain grassland, but also Blue Wildebeest, Kudu, Blesbuck, Red Hartebeest and Zebra.  At the kudu view point you will have time to enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the farm.

On day 2 of this trail, hikers go back to the Main Farmhouse through Bushveld. This 9km trail back home, stretches out across different areas of this beautiful game farm with more dams suitable for swimming.Hikers can also take the longer trail back which is approximately 11km.

There are different types of self-catering accommodation on the farm. No matter whether you stay at the Log Cabin, Main Farmhouse, The Bushcamp or The White House Farmhouse, you will be able to start with a hiking trail at any of these accommodation units.

The Mountain Hut provides accommodation for most backpackers on the overnight trails.  There is no electricity supply to the hut and you have to stoke the “donkey” for a hot shower!  The mountain cabin has two bedrooms with 6 single beds in each, a communal bathroom with toilet and shower and a small kitchen. You need to bring your own crockery and cutlery.  The mountain cabin can sleep 12 hikers but there is ample space for tents should you require room for a bigger group.
